NABUZARDAN 2023

Nabuzardan is back, the Mantua Carnival for families at Palazzo Te, conceived and organised by the Segni d’infanzia association, promoted and supported by the Municipality of Mantua. On Saturday 18 February, the city of Mantua becomes the ideal destination for a Carnival dedicated to children, adults, and suitable for all ages.

The events, signed Segni d’infanzia allow families and tourists to take possession of historical places, such as Palazzo Te, which for the time of an afternoon comes alive with shows and workshops, helping to strengthen the sense of belonging and cultivate the pleasure of beauty.

The event, lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, will be hosted inside the Villa Giuliesca on the afternoon of Saturday 18 February and will be repeated twice, with entrance shifts at 14:45 and 16:45. In this way, visitors will have the opportunity to walk through the splendid spaces inside and outside the Palace, which will be animated by the artists selected by Segni d’infanzia.

Tickets are limited in number and are available online on vivaticket, by phone on 0376/752882 and at the Segni d’infanzia office in via L. C. Volta, 9/B on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

During the ticket purchase, it will be possible to make a donation (through a liberal contribution) in support of all those who have been overwhelmed by the terrible earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. By deciding to donate, you will be supporting UNICEF, which has already been present for years in those territories, and is now committing all available resources to intervene in support of the population affected by the catastrophe.

A year to celebrate. Carnival, the flagship event for the city of Mantua, kicks off, as it does every year, the numerous events that Segni organises throughout the year. The year 2023, in particular, will be full of events and very significant for Segni d’infanzia, which is celebrating twenty-five editions of Nabuzardan – The Carnival of the city of Mantua, and the ‘coming of age’ of SEGNI New Generations Festival, this year in its eighteenth edition, which will take place from 28 October to 5 November 2023.

The salute to the symbol animal. On 18 February – during the Nabuzardan – people will be able to say goodbye to the Ant, the glorious symbol animal of Segni 2022 that has accompanied the community during an important year of post-pandemic restart.

In fact, the Formica created by artist and set designer Giulia Casari will be on display for the last time. On 17 February, the Ant will travel to some schools in the Mantua area to meet the students who drew it during the past year.

The programme in detail. To enliven this edition, Segni has selected 5 artists from the Spazio Circo Bergamo collective, who will perform highly original circus numbers. In addition to the circus, there will also be other novelties: the return to Mantua of Sara Zoia, an acclaimed and much-loved actress, who will bring “Le letture della Regina Formica”, and Segni’s artistic director Cristina Cazzola, who for the occasion will don the shoes of an artist to join the festivities in grand style and lead participants in a special “Danza Trasforma Animale” (Animal Transformations Dance) in the Sala dei Cavalli.

It will all begin on the lawn of the Esedra with performances by the masked acrobats of Spazio Circo Bergamo with “CARNIVAL CIRCUS… pensa se le maschere andassero al circo!”, who will recite Carnival rhymes and perform great numbers together with traditional characters from the commedia dell’arte: Arlecchino, Brighella, Gianduia, Pierrot, Pantalone and Colombina, grappling with aerial fabrics, ropes, hoops, free scales and trapeze.

Once the performance in the magnificent Exedra is over, the public – whom Segni invites to come to the event in the most imaginative disguises possible – will be led into the Cortile d’Onore, where they will be able to have fun with the jugglers and enter the rooms on either side of the courtyard. In the Sala dei Cavalli, artistic director Cristina Cazzola will accompany the public in “Danza Trasforma Animale”, while in the Sala dei Capitani there will be Sara Zoia with “Le letture della Regina Formica”.

To crown all these activities, there will be two children’s make-up stations, which will satisfy young and old alike with totally original tricks.

This is the magic of Nabuzardan: to bring the youngest and the new generations closer to art, investing in the creation of content that enhances the artistic and cultural venue that is Palazzo Te, which since the time of the Duke of Mantua Federico II Gonzaga has been a leisure destination. Just like at Palazzo Te, Segni d’infanzia will animate the beautiful city centre and lungorio of Mantua with magical circus and juggling acts starting at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 18 February (the morning event does not require reservations).
